Question #1Hi Dr. John: I’m wondering if you could explore treatments for back pain and alternatives to back surgery and discuss these on air.
Those of us who suffer are always looking for solutions. Thank You, Mary Ann
Most of us will experience back pain at some time or another in our lives. It’s also the most common reason to visit a doctor or call off sick at work. Although it’s a universal problem back pain is also sometimes very difficult to treat effectively. There are many nonsurgical options to try. The first line of treatment is usually rest, nonsterioidal antiinflammatory medication, and ice or warmth. Occasionally muscle relaxer medications might be needed as well to get rid of spasms that can cause the pain to keep returning. Stretching, and certain physical therapy type exercises can help as well. Manipulation, from either an Osteopathic Physician or Chiropractor can help alleviate pain in some instances. And once recovery starts, slow, light exercise can help keep the back stretched out and help in the recovery. But the caution here is to let pain be the main guide. If it hurts to do something, then avoid doing that particular motion until the pain is no longer there.
